The ic 7812 is a positive voltage regulator which means that it generates the positive voltage with respect to the common ground. In case if both the positive and negative voltage supply is needed in the same circuit. The voltage regulator ic 7812 is combined with its corresponding 79XX family IC that is 7912 IC. The IC can handle maximum load of 1A to 1.5A but the input current should be 2A to get 1A to 1.5A at the output.

Component's Needed:

°LM7812 IC

° 25V 1000uf capacitor

° 16V 1500uf capacitor

°Heatsink

°insulated wires

°soldering

°23V powersupply input

Here this circuit diagram is for +12V regulated (fixed voltage) DC power supply. This power supply circuit diagram is ideal for an average current requirement of 1Amp. This circuit is based on IC LM7812. It is a 3-terminal (+ve) voltage regulator IC. It has short circuit protection and thermal overload protection. LM7812 IC is from LM78XX series. The LM78XX series IC is positive voltage regulator IC for different voltage requirements, for example LM7805 IC is made for 5 volt fixed output voltage. There is LM79XX IC series for negative voltage.

A transformer(Tx=Primary 230 Volt, Secondary 12 Volt, 1Amp step down transformer) is used to covert 230V to 12V from mains. Here used a bridge rectifier made by four 1N4007 or 1N4003 diode to convert AC to DC. The filtering capacitor 1000uF,25V is used to reduce the ripple and get a smooth DC voltage. This circuit is very easy to build. For good performance input voltage should be greater than 12Volt in pin-1 of IC LM7812. Use a heat sink to IC LM7812 to safeguarding it from overheating.

LM7812

LM7812 is a TO-220 packaged positive voltage regulator IC of LM78xx series that is manufactured by many different electronic components manufacturers. The IC provides fixed 12V output voltage no matter if the input voltage is fluctuating or changing continuously or it is higher than 12V but the input voltage should not be more than 35V which is the maximum input voltage limit this IC is capable of handling. Moreover the input voltage should not be less than 14V that is the minimum input voltage requirement of the IC to provide fixed 12V output. Although this IC is designed for fixed output but the output can also be adjusted if required by the user with the help of only two external resistors at the output the details can be found below in this article.
