How does a wind turbine work? | Sustainability

How is wind power converted into electrical energy? You've probably seen sometime a wind farm: several wind turbines, like the old windmills that move their blades when the air blows. It is a simple process at first glance, but maybe you don't know what happens inside a turbine to convert wind power into electricity.

Sustainability for kids is a Vestas’ initiative designed for children to explain what wind energy is, why it is so important and how it works. Young people are the future and should be at the center of any plan intended to bring about change and sustained prosperity.

Based on this premise, and as part of our “Sustainability in Everything We Do” strategy, we have designed these videos to inspire generations to come, making education and sustainability more accessible.

Every 24 hours, wind generates enough kinetic energy to produce roughly 35 times more electricity than humanity uses each day. And unlike coal or oil, this resource is totally renewed each day. So how can we harness this incredible amount of energy, and is it possible to create a world powered entirely by wind? Rebecca Barthelmie and Sara Pryor dig into the science of wind turbine technology.
