An automatic transfer switch (ATS) transfers power supply from its primary source to a backup source automatically, when it senses partly failure or a total failure in the primary source.
When a failure occurs in the primary power system the ATS invokes the backup source which is a three phase diesel powered generator here, to run electric equipment until utility power is restored.
This ATS is capable of automatic starting and stopping of the generator too, in addition to the automatic transferring of power to the load.
ATS needs to be properly designed and wired to the primary and backup power sources, as it must communicate effectively with both power sources to switch power and connect the equipment to the proper power source with a minimum delay period.
