These stationary volumetric pumps have a simple configuration, since the internal mobility concerns only very few parts. It is on this operation that part of this article will focus. But in addition, the advantages and disadvantages of these positive displacement devices will be discussed.
Pump types and how they work
As the name implies, gear pumps are rotary-type devices. The rotation of the gear allows the flow of the fluid as well as the rise in pressure, within the box itself.
There are two types of hydraulic gear pumps, the operation of which differs significantly. These include external or simple gear pumps and internal gear pumps.
External gear pumps
External gear pumps have two impellers whose teeth cover the circumferences. These wheels mesh while performing opposite rotations. For the driving wheel, it is directly subjected to the movement of the engine. As for the driven wheel, it just undergoes the action of the drive wheel by gear.
When the cogwheels separate facing the inlet port, the vacuum created is directly occupied by fluid from the reservoir. The latter is then transported by the teeth, along the walls of the body of the pump in the cells formed by the two supports.
Axial sealing is ensured by plates preventing the fluid from overflowing on the sides. The latter is thus led to the discharge port where it is evacuated.
