Water Turbine

A turbine is a device that convert the hydraulic energy (kinetic energy and pressure energy) of some fluid - such as water, steam, air, or combustion gases into the mechanical energy.

What is a Kaplan turbine ?This turbine was invented by an Austrian professor Viktor Kaplan. Kaplan Turbine works on the principle of axial flow reaction. The Kaplan turbine operates under low water heads (10-70 meters) and also which are guiding types and it is employed to have high discharge (70-800 cube meters per second). Turbine speed range lies between  55 to 450 rpm. output ranges from 5 to 200 MW Kaplan turbines are the most common water turbine in use today, and can achieve over 90-93% efficiency.

What is a Francis turbine ?

This turbine was invented by British-American engineer James B. Francis. The Francis turbine is a type of water turbine. It is an inward-flow reaction turbine that combines radial and axial flow concepts. Francis Turbine is a combination of both impulse and reaction turbine, where the blades rotate using both reaction and impulse force of water. The Francis turbine operates under medium water heads (45-400 meters) and also which are guiding types and it is employed to have medium discharge (10-700 cube meters per second). Turbine speed range lies between 75 and 1000 rpm. Francis turbines are the most common water turbine in use today, and can achieve over 95% efficiency.

What is a Pelton Wheel turbine?

The Pelton wheel turbine is one kind of an impulse turbine utilized for high heads of water and low water flow (greater than 300 meters) and was invented by an American Engineer, Lester Allan Pelton. Pelton Turbine is a Tangential flow impulse turbine in which the pressure energy of water is converted into kinetic energy to form high speed water jet and this jet strikes the pelton wheel tangentially to make it rotate.
